Where is North Letter based?
North Letter is a small Sydney-based leather workshop founded and operated by Sue.
Every notebook cover is handmade in Sydney using carefully selected Italian leather and traditional leathercraft techniques.
Are your products handmade?
Yes.
Every North Letter notebook cover is handmade by me, Sue.
I source premium leather, cut each piece by hand, finish the edges, assemble the cover, and complete the final quality inspection myself before it leaves my workshop.
There is no production line or mass manufacturing involved.
Why did you start North Letter?
After spending many years working in the optical industry, I developed a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, quality materials, and attention to detail.
Leather has always fascinated me—the way it feels, smells, and develops character over time.
North Letter was created from a desire to make simple, functional leather goods that are built to be used and enjoyed for years.
About the Leather
What leather do you use?
I use premium Italian vegetable-tanned cowhide leather selected for its durability, natural beauty, and ability to age gracefully.
Unlike heavily coated leathers, vegetable-tanned leather retains much of its natural character and develops a rich patina over time.
Each hide is unique, making every notebook cover slightly different.
What does "vegetable-tanned" mean?
Vegetable tanning is a traditional leather tanning method that uses natural plant-based tannins rather than harsh synthetic chemicals.
The result is a durable, environmentally conscious leather that develops beautiful character as it ages.
Will the leather develop a patina?
Yes.
One of the most loved qualities of vegetable-tanned leather is its ability to develop a natural patina.
Over time, exposure to light, handling, and everyday use will gradually deepen the colour and create a unique finish that reflects your journey.
No two pieces will age exactly the same way.
I noticed small marks, wrinkles, or scratches. Is this normal?
Yes.
Because the leather is genuine full-grain leather with a natural finish, you may occasionally notice:
• Small scars
• Growth marks
• Neck wrinkles
• Grain variations
• Light surface scratches
These are natural characteristics of real leather and are not considered defects.
Many leather enthusiasts appreciate these unique features as evidence of authentic leather.
Will scratches disappear?
Most minor scratches can be softened or reduced over time through regular handling.
The natural oils from your hands often help blend light marks into the surrounding leather.
As the leather develops a patina, many small marks become less noticeable.
Is the leather waterproof?
No.
Vegetable-tanned leather is not waterproof.
Light exposure to moisture is generally fine, but prolonged contact with water should be avoided.
If your leather becomes wet, gently pat it dry and allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources.

How long will it take to receive my order?

How should I care for my notebook cover?
To keep your leather looking its best:

• Apply a quality leather conditioner occasionally if the leather becomes dry

Will the colour change over time?
Yes.
Vegetable-tanned leather naturally darkens and develops richer tones as it ages.
This is part of the natural ageing process and one of the reasons many people love vegetable-tanned leather.
Personalisation
Can I personalise my notebook cover?
Selected styles can be personalised with names, initials, or custom embossing.

Are all notebook covers exactly the same?
No.
Because every piece is handmade from genuine leather, slight variations in grain, colour, texture, and natural markings are completely normal.
These differences are part of what makes each piece unique.
Returns
Can I return my order?
Please contact me as soon as possible if there is an issue with your order.
Natural leather markings, grain variations, colour variations, and other characteristics of genuine leather are not considered defects.
